Thin MDF (1-5mm thick) is widely used in furniture, packaging, and crafts for its smooth surface and light weight. But how is high-quality, eco-friendly (E0/E1 grade) Thin MDF produced? Below are the 7 key simplified steps from raw materials to finished panels.
Main Materials: Fast-growing softwoods (pine, poplar) – high fiber, low resin, easy to process.
Waste Use: Wood scraps/sawdust (8-12% moisture) for sustainability.
Impurity Removal: Screen out bark, stones, and metal to protect equipment.
Chipping: Cut wood into 20×20×3mm uniform chips.
Cooking: Heat chips at 160-180℃ (high pressure) for 20-30 mins to soften fibers.
Grinding: Use a defibrator to make fine fibers (1-2mm long) – key for thin, strong panels.
Glue Type: UF resin (standard) or formaldehyde-free resin (E0/E1 grade).
Ratio: 10-12% glue to dry fiber (higher for thin MDF’s bonding).
Additives: Wax (waterproof) + hardeners (fast curing).
Spreading: Evenly spread glued fibers into a mat via airflow.
Calibration: Adjust to 1-5mm thickness (check every 10 secs).
Pre-Pressing: Press at 5-10MPa for 1-2 mins to compact fibers.
Temp: 180-200℃ (cures glue fast).
Pressure: 20-30MPa (lower than thick MDF to avoid brittleness).
Time: 30sec-3mins (depends on thickness: 1mm=30sec, 5mm=3mins).
Cooling: Cool to 20-25℃ to lock shape.
Trimming: Cut to standard sizes (2440×1220mm etc.) and trim edges.
Thickness deviation ≤0.1mm;
Formaldehyde ≤0.5mg/L (E0) or ≤1.5mg/L (E1);
Smooth surface (no scratches/bubbles);
Bending test (no cracks).
Gift boxes/instrument trays: Prioritize uniform thickness + smooth surface.
Bathroom/kitchen: Choose waterproof (wax-added) + E0 grade.
Furniture backing (bulk): Select softwood-made + precision-pressed panels.
